Delta tub shower faucets are composed of two parts. The Trim Kit (which is the part you see) and the Rough-in Valve (which is the part that installs inside the wall). We will discuss the valve in the next section, and will focus on the Trim Kit here. Of course, when choosing a bathtub shower combination, you definitely need to consider the style. Do you want a modern large tub shower combo or a more traditional style tub and shower faucet combo? What type of showerhead do you want? Multi-setting or Raincan style? What finish do you want? Etc. Something not often considered (but maybe should be!) is which Shower Cartridge is included with the Trim Kit.
Delta has 3 main types of tub and shower combination cartridge. Monitor 14 series cartridges are found in all single handle Delta tub shower combo faucets. The 14 series cartridge is pressure and temperature balanced. The trickier cartridges to explain are the Monitor 17 and Thermostatic 17T TempAssure. Tub and shower fixtures with either of these cartridges, have 2 handles, stacked on top of each other. The larger handle on the bottom lets you set the water volume and the smaller handle on the top lets you set the temperature. The difference between the 17 and 17T cartridges is related to how exactly the water temperature and pressure is regulated inside the tub shower combo trim kit. In 2006 Delta completely redesigned their tub and shower faucet valve. Now all Delta tub and shower trim kits fit the same universal MultiChoice R10000 Series valve. Even though all Delta tub shower faucet combos will fit the same valve, there are still a few options to consider when it comes to choosing the best tub shower combo valve for your project. The main concern is whether or not you need a valve with stops. When you install a new modern bathtub shower combo, you should take a moment to consider how easy it would be to shut off the water should the fixture ever require repair. This is where stops come in. Rough-in Valve screwdriver stops allow you to shut the water off to an individual tub / shower fixture rather than forcing you to shut off the water to the entire house in the unlikely event that a repair is required. If you live in a single family home, where shutting off the water for a few hours is not a big deal, stops are likely unnecessary. In a multi-family home like a condo or an apartment, shutting off the water may be a bit more involved. This means having a tub / shower valve with stops can save the trouble of needing to turn off water to the entire complex (in some states stops are actually required by building code in multi-family homes). Either valve you choose is totally fine. We tend to recommend the "with stops" version because the cost increase is minimal, and the benefits are really worth it if you ever have a situation with a leaky shower where you can't get the plumber out the same day. Before we discuss more about the plumbing of a Delta custom shower system with tub spout, it's important to have a basic idea of how a shower system without tub spout works. The short explanation is that your mixing valve connects to the hot and cold water lines. It creates warm water, which is output to the diverter. The important thing to mention here, in our article about tub filler faucets, is that a tub spout can be added to just about any shower only system (careful, there are exceptions). You just have to make sure you are familiar with the way the plumbing works and make sure the valve installed has an open port at the bottom so you can run a pipe to the tub spout. If plumbed correctly, adding a tub spout to a shower system is pretty simple. If done incorrectly, your results may not be what you hoped. Although the theory behind the installation is simple enough, this is 100% a job for a plumber and we always recommend using a professional for this type of installation.
When plumbing a Full Custom Shower System with Tub Spout, it's important that you use a valve that has an open bottom outlet port. The majority of Delta R10000 Series MultiChoice valves do have an open port at the bottom. It's good to be aware that Delta does make some valves which are permanently capped at the bottom. The R10000-UNWSHF valve is commonly found in shower only systems. This particular valve is permanently capped and it is not possible to add a tub spout. The images below help illustrate. If you plan to add a tub spout to your full custom shower system, make sure you have a valve with an open bottom outlet port.
In the images below you will see illustrated the most common mistake when it comes to plumbing a walk in tub shower combination. At least when it comes to the Delta brand, you should NEVER plumb the tub spout off of a diverter port. The reason is that the diverter actually restricts the water flow a bit. This restriction will not impact the showerhead or hand shower (because no shower sprayhead flows at more than 2.5 GPM max), but it will negatively impact a tub spout. This could mean it will take longer to fill your tub. The proper way to install a custom shower tub combo, is to use a tub spout with diverter, and a mixing valve with an open bottom port. The water will flow initially from the tub spout, at full force, and will enable you to rapidly fill your tub. If you pull-up on the tub spout diverter, the shower sprays will be activated, and you can use the wall mount diverter to control the various spray settings.

One more option to consider if you want a two person bathtub shower combo fixture are our Easy Install Tub Shower Systems. Easy install tub and shower faucets with handheld function much like a full custom shower system, however instead of having 2 rough-in valves, the mixing valve and the diverter valve, they only have 1 valve (the mixing). The diverter valve is unnecessary in an Easy Install tub shower combo with handheld spray because these systems make use of Delta's 3-setting shower arm mount diverter. In an Easy Install tub shower system, the water will initially flow from the tub spout, just like the full custom tub shower systems discussed before. Pulling up on the Tub Spout diverter activates the shower sprays. The 3-setting shower arm diverter allows you to choose whether you want to run the hand shower only, the showerhead only, or both at the same time. Whether you choose a Full Custom Shower System with Tub Spout or an Easy Install Tub Shower System, you need to make sure to choose a valve that has an open bottom port. Heed our earlier warning and do not install a tub spout off a diverter port. When choosing your tub shower system rough-in valve, we recommend you go with the same valve you would use in a standard tub / shower combination. Both Delta R10000-UNWS and Delta R10000-UNBX are suitable choices for any shower system with tub spout. Make sure to avoid Delta R10000-UNWSHF valve and all R22000 series valves, as the bottom outlet port for these styles is permanently capped, and so they are not suitable for tub shower applications.
