In this article we focus on Matte Black shower systems, however Delta makes the best shower system fixtures in lots of great finishes. At the core of a Matte Black shower system are the control handles along with their corresponding rough-in valves. There are 2 important controls needed for all Delta shower systems. First is the temperature and pressure mixing valve control handle, and second is the diverter valve control handle. Some Delta fixtures feature dual temperature and water pressure control handles which give you the ability to set each independently. A black shower faucet system is no different from any other. You need a way to turn the water on (and set the temperature), plus you need a way to divert the water to the various shower spray outlets. Often you will encounter a fixture Delta calls an Integrated Diverter shower control. These fixtures merge all handles to a single control panel.
A Delta shower system in matte black can be built in 2 ways. A shower system base contains either a separate mixing valve and diverter valve, or an integrated diverter trim kit plus valve. Once you understand the concept of a shower system base, it is not very difficult to see how to put one together yourself. All Delta black shower systems (and all Delta shower systems in general), require a mixing valve, a diverter valve, a mixing valve trim kit, and a diverter valve trim kit. The mixing valve connects to the hot and cold water supply lines in your home and mixing the water to a warm temperature. The mixing valve trim kit, allows you to interact with the mixing valve and set your preferred water temperature. The warm water, then leaves the mixing via the outlet port and runs up into the diverter valve. The diverter trim kit then lets you select which of your spray groups will be running at any given time. An integrated diverter fixture functions in EXACTLY the same way. The only difference is the mixing valve and diverter valve are welded together at the factory, and all the control handles are found on the same shower control panel plate. In this example, featuring Delta Stryke Collection Matte Black finish, you see the 4 separate fixtures that make up this shower system base. The mixing valve and diverter valve install inside the wall and the trim kits attach to the marble or tile.
Functionally this is the same as the shower system base with separate controls. The difference is instead of 4 separate fixtures, this configuration requires only 2. The integrated diverter valve installs inside the wall and the trim kit attaches after the wall is closed up.

In a standard shower faucet, you only have one shower spray outlet (typically a normal wall mount showerhead) but with a shower system you have 2 or more spray outlets. The addition of more spray outlets (like handheld showers, body sprays, ceiling mount showerheads, or additional wall mount showerheads) necessitates the diverter. For example, A Delta Matte Black shower system with handheld utilizes a 3-setting diverter with 2 individual settings, and 1 shared setting. This lets you decide if you want to run the showerhead only, the hand shower only, or both at the same time.
All Delta shower systems require some kind of diverter fixture. If you want a black shower system with handheld and normal wall showerhead you will need a 3-setting diverter. But wait a minute! There are only TWO spray outlets, why do you need a THREE setting diverter? The reason is the shared setting option. If you have a showerhead and a hand shower, with a 3-setting diverter you can choose to run the showerhead only, hand sprayer only, or both at the same time. Note, whether you have a 3-setting or 6-setting diverter trim kit, the rough-in valve is the same. The difference has only to do with the number of outlet ports on the valve that will be utilized by your shower system. With a 3-setting diverter trim kit, the 3rd diverter valve outlet port will be capped by the plumber.
Note in the images below, the number of "tic" marks on the diverter trim kit. Each mark represents a different setting. By positioning the diverter handle accordingly, you will be able to adjust which spray outlets are running. The diverter has no function on its own. It must be paired with a mixing valve and trim kit.
If you want THREE spray outlets, a 3-setting diverter trim kit will no longer be enough. With three spray outlet shower systems, a 6-setting diverter is required. With a 6-setting diverter trim kit, your plumber will be able to utilize all 3 diverter valve outlet ports and attach a spray outlet group to each. If you want a matte black shower faucet set with a wall mount showerhead, handheld showerhead, and a ceiling mount rain showerhead, a 6-setting diverter will give you the power to control each outlet. The 6-setting diverter lets you run any spray group individually, or any combination of 2 spray groups at the same time. So, in our example, you would have the following 6 setting options: 1) wall mount showerhead only, 2) handheld showerhead only, 3) ceiling mount showerhead only 4) wall mount showerhead plus handheld showerhead 5) wall mount showerhead plus ceiling mount showerhead 6) handheld showerhead plus ceiling mount showerhead. NOTE, with Delta shower systems you cannot run all 3 spray groups at the same time.
The integrated diverter is the top-most handle on the control panel. The images below differ in the number of "tic" marks, you see near this handle. Each mark represents a different diverter spray setting. The bottom two handles are used for adjusting the water temperature and pressure. A Delta integrated diverter control fixture with corresponding rough-in valve represents a complete shower system base.
One final thing to mention about shower systems with diverters and body sprays. If you want a shower system in matte black finish with body sprays, it's important to understand that even though you will likely have multiple body sprayheads, they will be plumbed as a group off a single diverter port. The body sprays will function as a set and count as only a single spray group. More on body sprays later so keep reading.

Although not required, just about all black shower sets include a wall mounted showerhead. A matte black shower head set is likely the spray outlet you will use the most for daily showering. Keep in mind, that most showerheads do not include the shower arm or flange. A shower arm is the part which connects to the pipe inside the wall (that is fed water by the diverter valve). The shower arm is a finished piece of 1/2" pipe, onto which you can connect your showerhead. The shower flange is a small piece of metal designed to cover the hole in the wall that was made for the shower arm pipe. With a showerhead, arm, and flange you will have a reliable fixture for daily use. You will see that nearly all our Delta black diverter shower systems feature a wall mounted showerhead. Matte Black shower fixtures with handheld are perfect for your full custom shower system. A Delta matte black shower hand held sprayer consists of a few basic components. The sprayer itself is where the water actually comes out. The sprayer mounts in a bracket on the slidebar which can be moved up in down. Some hand shower kits feature a wall mounted bracket instead of a slidebar mounted bracket but the function is more or less the same. The bracket holds the hand sprayer in place while you are not actively using it. When sitting in its mounting bracket, a handheld spray functions more or less like a second showerhead. The drop / wall elbow connects to the pipe inside the wall and covers the hole in the marble or tile. The wall elbow then delivers warm water from the shower diverter valve to the handheld sprayer via the hose. A Delta matte black shower system with handheld sprayer is our most popular configuration. A Matte Black Delta rain shower head is one of the most requested shower system fixtures. A Delta rain head in Matte Black gives your shower system that spa-like look and feel. A black rain shower head system includes a showerhead mounted to the ceiling instead of the wall. By mounting the showerhead to the ceiling, you get the full rain shower effect, with water coming down from directly above. Much like a normal wall mount showerhead, black rain shower set includes a showerhead, shower arm, and shower flange. Note, the shower arm and flange are typically sold separately from the showerhead. This is because in most cases, the showerhead could function as a wall mount showerhead with a different shower arm. A Matte Black shower system with body sprays requires a little bit of planning, but the end result can be fantastic! The Matte Black diverter trim and valve are the key to adding body sprays to a standard shower faucet. The most important thing to understand is that the wall mounted body sprays will function as a group, and will be plumbed off of a single diverter port. In the graphic representing the shower system plumbing, you can get an idea of how this all works for a shower system with showerhead, hand shower, and a set of body sprays. For more information, you can read our detailed guide to shower systems with body sprays. The body sprays are arranged and installed by the plumber on a pressure loop inside the wall. The pressure loop will make sure the water pressure is evenly distributed to all body sprays. Delta, and most manufacturers, highly recommend installing a pressure loop, even though some plumbers will say it is unnecessary. It is some extra work but you don't want to find out you have water pressure issues once the wall has been closed up. Delta recommends installing no more than 4 body sprays off a diverter outlet port. If you want more than 4 body sprays, it's better to consider 2 complete shower systems, each with their own hot and cold supply (the guide linked earlier in this paragraph has tons of detailed information on this topic). A complete system in Matte Black with body sprays makes for a truly luxurious experience. When it comes to Matte Black finish Delta shower systems, the shower cartridge is the part that most impacts the water flow rate. Whereas some other brands utilize different valves and different pipe sizes, Delta's universal valves are always the same. It is the Delta shower cartridge flow rates which are not all the same. The 17T TempAssure thermostatic cartridge offers a number of benefits, that are especially applicable if you want a full custom shower system. With a Matte Black thermostatic shower system, you will get the highest water flow rate, and the most precise water temperature control. In addition, Delta's thermostatic shower cartridge seamlessly handles seasonal ground water temperature changes, making it unnecessary to adjust the temperature limit stop throughout the year. A thermostatic shower system in black finish provides the best functionality, however typically a 17T shower cartridge is more expensive. Depending on the water demands of your shower system, and where you live in the country (i.e., are there wide temperature swings throughout the year?), you may or may not benefit from a thermostatic shower cartridge. Black Matte rain shower systems or shower systems in Matte Black with body sprays may benefit from extra water pressure and precise temperature control the thermostatic cartridge provides. In some cases, a 17 series black Delta shower system with a normal pressure balanced cartridge will be every bit as good. Both 17 Monitor pressure balanced shower cartridges and 17T TempAssure thermostatic cartridges offer separate control of the water temperature and pressure. The difference between how exactly this dual shower control is achieved, has to do with the technology inside the cartridge. Adding a tub spout to your Matte Black shower head Delta system is easier than you may think. With the proper rough-in valve, and a tub spout with diverter, you will have everything you need to create a Matte Black tub and shower system. A Delta Matte Black shower system with tub spout utilizes their universal R10000 series rough-in valve with open bottom port. All our pre-built Matte Black shower tub combo systems use the Delta R10000-UNWS mixing valve with stops. Just keep in mind, a tub spout cannot be added to an R22000 integrated diverter valve, or an R10000-UNWSHF valve, as both of these have a permanently capped bottom port. The main thing to know when it comes to a tub shower system is that Delta does not recommend running a tub spout off a diverter port as this will restrict the water flow. Rather, Delta Black shower systems with tub spout make use of a pull-up tub spout diverter. With a Delta Black shower tub and handheld system, the water will initially flow from the tub spout. To "activate" the shower system sprays (e.g., the showerhead, rain head, or handheld sprayer), you simply pull up the tub spout diverter. From there, you will use the shower system diverter to control the shower spray outlets. Take a look at the images below which help to illustrate the proper way to plumb a Delta black shower and tub system.
As shown in the images above, Delta does not recommend plumbing a tub spout off a diverter port. Instead, the tub spout must be connected to the bottom port of the mixing valve. Because of this, you cannot use a tub spout with a shower system with integrated diverter valve, as that particular valve is permanently capped at the bottom and will not support the addition of a tub spout. This is also true for the Delta R10000-UNWSHF and R10000-UNBXHF valves, which are both also capped at the bottom. Make sure to discuss the valve piece with your plumber before ordering if you have any questions. Whether you are looking for a retrofit kit for your existing black shower knobs or want a brand new matte black rain shower head system with hand sprayer, a Delta Emerge shower column may be right for you. It might help to think of an Delta Emerge shower column as a very special type of shower arm as that might help simply the explanation of how it works. Basically, a Delta Emerge shower column connects to the pipe in the wall where normally you would install a standard shower arm. A Matte Black finish Emerge shower system receives all the water it uses via the shower outlet pipe. It then takes this water, and distributes it to both a hand shower and a showerhead. You can use the built in diverter to switch between the hand spray and showerhead, or run both at the same time. Because it gets all its water via a single pipe, this fixture is ideal for retrofit jobs where you already have a shower control and valve. Simply attach the Emerge column to the shower arm pipe outlet, order the showerhead and hand shower spray head of your choice, screw in the slide bar, and you are ready to go! Just make sure you have a tub spout with diverter! For a new construction, or more complete renovation project, you will need to make sure you also have a shower valve and control trim, preferably in a style and finish to match! Have you been shopping for the perfect rain shower system in Matte Black but having trouble finding something compliant in California? We can help! Due to the drought in recent years, California has implemented some of the country's strictest water usage regulations. Matte Black shower fixtures with handheld must comply with two main restrictions in order to be considered a California compliant shower system. 1) None of the shower spray outlets may flow at a rate higher than 1.8 gallons per minute. 2) You may not have a shared-setting diverter. This is because even 2 compliant showerheads running at the same time, will use more than 1.8 gallons per minute and violate the 1st rule. So, what is the solution if you still desperately want a black thermostatic shower system with matte black handheld shower slide bar?! Well first off, you need to make sure that whichever spray outlets you want your shower system to have, flow at no more than 1.8 gallons per minute individually. Let's say for example, you have a Delta Matte Black integrated diverter shower system with showerhead and handheld shower. A non-shared diverter cartridge will remove the ability to run the showerhead and hand shower at the same time. However, it will still give you the power to switch between the two. What we mainly want to caution against, is purchasing a very inexpensive imported shower system from a no-name brand on a site like Amazon. There are many inexpensive and admittedly nice looking black shower systems for sale there. However, what seems like a good deal now, could have pretty disastrous ramifications years down the line. All the positive reviews are from RECENT purchases. What you need are reviews from people who have had the product installed for 10-20 years to really know anything about the quality.
Especially when it comes to the fixtures in the shower, we highly urge you to choose a well-regarded big brand. One reason is that if some small part fails in a shower faucet, it could flood your entire house. All major brands carry insurance for this type of thing. The major manufacturers like Moen, Kohler, and Delta have state of the art manufacturing plants with superior quality control. Their parts are designed to prevent catastrophic failure.
Really though, it's not catastrophic failures you have to worry. Even in a no-name product I assume that would be rare. But what if a small leak from the showerhead shows up. Drip drip drip. This is super common and typically very easy to fix. With a major brand, a simple call to their warranty department will have a free replacement part on the way. You'll get help identifying what you need, and even guidance on how to fix it yourself if possible. With a no-name brand, you may find yourself forced to literally rip out your entire shower tile to replace a defective valve because no parts are available. Just to solve a small leak. Don't let this happen to you!
